康奈尔、耶鲁和达特茅斯都是中国学生最喜欢的藤校,又在一年的暑假如期放题。它们的文书题目精简到极致的字数让许多同学都感到没有施展拳脚的空间。那么怎样才能写好藤校文书呢?下面挑选美国藤校文书题目做下解读,希望对大家有所帮助。

C. In The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, William Kamkwamba '14 reflects on constructing a windmill from recycled materials to power electrical appliances in his family's Malawian house: "If you want to make it, all you have to do is try." D. Dr. Seuss, aka Theodor Geisel of Dartmouth's Class of 1925, wrote, "Think and wonder. Wonder and think." What do you wonder and think about?

达特茅斯吸引同学们的点,或许有着千个万个,但如何选取那个最闪光最让你无法割舍的点呢?这其实需要同学们去回顾和思考自己在申请profile里最强的特色和亮点是什么,以及,它和学校本身的气质产生了怎样的共鸣。例如,在去年辅导一位大牛同学时,我们发掘到了他最印象深刻的活动之一,就是在祖母的农场里干农活的一个体验。申请哲学的他,在田园乡间得到了许多瓦尔登湖式的、对于人与自然、生命与永恒相关的思考,而这道题,他就完美地套用了这个经历来讲述达特茅斯的农场对于他来讲有着怎样不同凡响的意义。这样的选题必定是出彩的、深入学校精神的。

第二道题也是一道看似传统的“介绍你自己”类的题目,然而题眼中对于奥斯卡王尔德的引用,则透露出了达特茅斯关注人文气息和文学背景的小心机。如果你也有在哲学、人文相关的造诣,并且也能够在这个自我介绍之中,去与人文气息浓厚的的作家、哲学家、文学家、思想家产生一些共鸣,加以引用,和自己的经历形成一个文学性的串联,那也一定会吸引有着别出心裁、小众文艺喜好的达特茅斯。

Applicants submitting the Coalition Application, Common Application, or QuestBridge Application will respond to the following short answer questions:

• Students at Yale have time to explore their academic interests before committing to one or more major fields of study. Many students either modify their original academic direction or change their minds entirely. As of this moment, what academic areas seem to fit your interests or goals most comfortably? Please indicate up to three from the list provided.

• Tell us about a topic or idea that excites you and is related to one or more academic areas you selected above. Why are you drawn to it? (200 words or fewer)

• What is it about Yale that has led you to apply? (125 words or fewer)

Applicants applying with the QuestBridge Application will complete the questions above via the Yale QuestBridge Questionnaire, available on the Yale Admissions Status Portal after an application has been received.

Applicants submitting the Coalition Application or Common Application will also respond to the following short answer questions, in no more than 200 characters (approximately 35 words):

• What inspires you?

• Yale’s residential colleges regularly host conversations with guests representing a wide range of experiences and accomplishments. What person, past or present, would you invite to speak? What would you ask them to discuss?

• You are teaching a new Yale course. What is it called?

• What is something about you that is not included anywhere else in your application?

? Essays

Applicants submitting the Coalition Application or Common Application will respond to one of the following prompts in 400 words or fewer. 

1. Yale carries out its mission “through the free exchange of ideas in an ethical, interdependent, and diverse community.” Reflect on a time when you exchanged ideas about an important issue with someone holding an opposing view. How did the experience lead you either to change your opinion or to sharpen your reasons for holding onto it?

2. Reflect on a time when you have worked to enhance a community to which you feel connected. Why have these efforts been meaningful to you? You may define community however you like.

耶鲁的题目在实质上跟达特茅斯极为相近,其实都让人有些怀疑,这两所藤校是不是约好了同时放题的吧?在耶鲁的提问之中,则把关注的重心更放在了学术的兴趣之上,而这也非常符合耶鲁对于学术的高标准、严要求。

尤其是在回答第一题:“描述三个你感兴趣的学术领域”时,大家一定要记住,如果你只是简单的回答了“经济、地理、人文”等等这样宽泛的方向,一定是不符合要求的。一个更好的答案可能是“18世纪英国女性作家在争取平等选举权之中发挥的影响力”,或者是“量子力学双缝实验如何减少变量准确观测“等等极其具体、并且能反映出你对该领域广博知识的命题。

第二小问,在描述这个学术领域为什么启发了你、影响了你的时候,同学们也注意一定要拿出自己的学术范儿,穿透学术领域之中的核心。我们可以把它想象为一个简单的research proposal,例如:在讨论你对于18世纪女性作家在平权方面的贡献时,一定要深入到具体哪一位女性的foundational work,或者某一篇文章之中促成了paradigm shift的观点,你认为是被学术界所低估的?有没有哪些亟待解决的疑点和研究方向,是你期待利用耶鲁的资源来完成的?

而耶鲁最难攻克的题目则无疑是35字的短问答。在写这篇文章时,我们可以利用的一个小窍门是:先写一个更长的、100到200字的版本,从中精简和浓缩你的内容。这一篇文章虽然只有35字,但它所需要体现的广度、深度和维度一定需要更大体量的内容来承担。因此,从一篇更长的文章来进行缩减,就能得到更好的写作效果。

Engineering the best solutions to complex problems is often achieved by drawing from the diverse ingenuity of people from different backgrounds, lived experiences, and identities. College of Human Ecology

与耶鲁的极简风相反的,则是康奈尔大学650字和主文书一样长的附加文书。如果说耶鲁走的是极简风,而康奈尔要求的则是极繁风。我们也一定能够想到,在650字的文书之中,如果对于学校的了解、对于专业的认识深度不够,一定会多多少少露出破绽和马脚。因此,在写康奈尔的这几道文书,无论是文理学院的“为什么要来康奈尔”,还是农学院的“为什么要学你的专业”,或者是工程学院的“工程如何给社区带来意义”,都需要很多的前期研究。

这篇文书不仅要具有一定的巧思,还需要实打实的前期积累。最令我印象深刻的一位前年直录康奈尔的文书之中,我们不仅描写了众多关于一起发掘到的学校边边角角的独家信息,充分炫技,还有这位同学如约参加部门的所有线上会议、听了所有info session、并且采访了众多康奈尔学长学姐的记录,这样的诚意是650字的文书都甚至无法覆盖的。而这篇文书之中所展露出的他对专业和学校的热情,顿时秒杀了90%,只是顺手申请康奈尔作为“海王养鱼”的同学们。而康奈尔想要的,也必定是这样的真诚勇敢的新一代学生。
